September 2011 Meeting Notes and Ideas to Share...

I have a few new ideas and tech gadgets that you might be interested in checking out from my AATE (Atlanta Area Technology Educators) meeting yesterday.

Let me know what you think...

This FREE website creates electronic books from pdf documents. This means that ANYTHING you do in your classroom can be made into an electronic book. Our scanners will convert to pdf and they can be uploaded to this site.
here are a few examples of what it can do...
Imagine the possibilities! :-)

Skyping from the classroom....
There are so many ways Skype can be used from your classroom, here are just a few ideas; Pen-Pals, Steve Spangler Science, Storytelling with Grandma, or another relative from home, Authors “visits”, Show and Tell, Students sick at home for long periods of time.
In addition to the actual Skype call, you can RECORD your calls so they can be used at a later time, or with another class. There are a few programs out there that will allow you to do this but this one has been recommended by another school;
Ecamm Call Recorder [Mac] seamlessly gives you recording controls in Skype. It comes with an automatic recording feature like MP3 Skype Recorder. After each recording the files are saved into a folder on your Mac, with the callers name and date. Other features it boasts:
  • Record Video Calls with Picture-in-Picture
  • Share Recordings in MP3 Format
  • Designed for Mac Users by Mac Users
  • Advanced Compression Technology Saves Space
  • Ecamm costs $19.95 to purchase but you can download a free demo here.

- Some also created pages that were connected, ie: Hannibal's Elephants
- Linked video diary posts
- Created a unique bibliography in the notes or posts

Digital Fabrication/Fab@School

Featured Speaker: Dr. Glen Bull, University of Virginia via Skype

Currently working with Lovett to maximize their STEM curriculum. Would like to expand this to include a group of independent schools in the Atlanta areas.

Focus on Grades 4-8.

Connecting Math & Engineering
Creating models and then creating the object with a Digital Fabrication "printer". This 2D fabrication machine creates the product the kids made on the computer program. Math and engineering skills are both needed to create the objects.

Link YouTube videos here! (did not have access at the meeting :-/)
